I was talking to Will when the subject of Google Talk came up. I haven’t downloaded it yet, and I feel completely no inclination to download it because I already have Skype. Google isn’t really doing anything new or fresh with their Google Talk. It’s exactly like Skype from what I read, other than the integration with Gmail accounts, and the ability to connect with other clients (like Gaim, though you will have to forgo the voice call function).

For comparison’s sake:

Google Talk:

  • Voice call other users
  • IM other users
  • Runs only on Windows platform
  • Ability to connect via other clients (but then it’ll work just like any other messengers out there
  • Skype:

  • Voice call other users
  • IM other users
  • Voice call phone numbers (with a fee)
  • Receive incoming calls from telephones (with a fee)
  • Voicemail feature (with a fee)
  • Runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Pocket PC
  • I guess I’m biased. I love the speed of sending files through Skype. :P But Google, considering how they are always hiring the top programmers (or so they say?), should come up with something creative instead of the same old things everyone has done before.

    1. plus, “skype” just sounds so much cooler than google. as a verb. anyway, it’s been a few weeks and still barely any of my friends are that interested in using google talk… we’re all too addicted to aim. i think google’s just too late in the game for all this, right?
